Biography

Katharine Mehrling lives in Berlin, where she has won the audience award "Golden Curtain" 6 times as Berlin's most popular actress: for her performance of Judy Garland at the Schlosspark Theater in END OF THE RAINBOW, her roles at the Renaissance Theater in NEXT TO NORMAL and EWIG JUNG, as well as at the Komische Oper Berlin in Barrie Kosky's productions ARIZONA LADY and BALL IM SAVOY. 2016 for her Eliza Doolittle in MY FAIR LADY at the Komische Oper Berlin. 2018 for her complete works on the Berlin stages, including MEHRLING AU BAR in Bar jeder Vernunft and the French comedy DIE WAHRHEIT in Schlosspark Theater. 2019 for her program VIVE LA VIE at the Bar jeder Vernunft, among others. She was also awarded the Berlin Bear - the BZ Culture Prize - in 2016.
She studied acting and musical theatre at London Studio Centre and at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute in New York. She made her stage debut in London's West End, at the Old Vic Theatre as Chrissy in HAIR.
Her successes include the titles and leading roles in IRMA LA DOUCE, PIAF , CABARET, SOME LIKE IT HOT, KISS ME KATE, DIE DREIGROSCHENOPER, BLEIB NOCH BIS ZUM SONNTAG, LES MISERABLES and EVITA at the Ronacher Theater, Vereinigte Bühnen Wien.
She created the role of Tippi Hedren in the musical THE BIRDS OF ALFRED HITCHCOCK by William Ward Murta, premiered at the Stadttheater Bielefeld in 2010, written especially for her.
Katharine Mehrling is known to film and television audiences through the feature film OPERATION WALKÜRE and the TRAUMSCHIFF episode "Mauritius". In the Sat1 film LIEBE AUF DEN ERSTEN TRICK, shot in Cape Town, she can be seen alongside Dieter Hallervorden, Veronica Ferres and Steffen Groth.
Katharine Mehrling dubbed the American animated series LALALOOPSY for Netflix.
Her love of jazz and French chanson was reflected in her programs and on several CDs: HOMMAGES, BONSOIR KATHARINE, PIAF AU BAR, MEHRLING AU BAR, VIVE LA VIE and AM RANDE DER NACHT.
She wrote the album AM RANDE DER NACHT together with jazz legend Rolf Kühn and produced it at Hansa Studios in Berlin. It was followed by her personality show of the same name in the Wintergarten Varieté. For this show she was awarded the Lale Andersen Förderpreis by Gitte Haenning.
Her concert with the NDR Radiophilharmonie KATHARINE MEHRLING SINGT PIAF (conductor: Enrique Ugarte) was broadcast on NDR Kultur Radio.
For her role of Fanny Brice in FUNNY GIRL in the ruins of the monastery of the Bad Hersfeld Festival she was awarded the Grand Hersfeld Prize of the Critics Jury as well as the Audience Prize in the summer of 2019.
In October 2019 she performed for the second time in New York at Joe's Pub and at The Cabaret in Indianapolis. At the Berliner Festspiele she was a special guest in Taylor Mac's monumental show "A 24-Decade History of Popular Music".
Since their collaboration on Paul Abraham's jazz operetta BALL IM SAVOY, Katharine Mehrling and Barrie Kosky have enjoyed a special artistic friendship. With their evening LONELY HOUSE (premiere: December 2019) they dedicated themselves to a composer they both admired and revered and transformed the large stage of the Komische Oper into an intimate place where the two of them presented French and American songs and songs from Kurt Weill's exile in Paris and New York in their very own way.
